Nearly Famous Rebuilding Blog –

Hi Sandsters –
Hope all is well with you today.
Well, Spring 2017 is happening is here and is very welcome. We made it through another winter, and we were pretty lucky. It could have been much colder, wetter, snowier and more miserable. Thank God for small favors.

Today, we’ll kick off with a link to an Asbury Park Press article in today’s paper, giving more sordid details about the Shore House Lifter debacle. I’m quoted twice, so click on it below to read the entire article. We talk about planning your fall project start, and share (remind) you of an alternate foundation system that could save you some money. We talk again about our mission statement, why Dream Homes completes some of the hardest projects in the community and list 5 facts about us you might not know. Finally, we’ll talk about April events, including the Ocean Home Recovery Workshop on Saturday April 1st and our next Nearly Famous Rebuilding Seminar, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19th, 2017.

New Blog Development – Easier for you to read and use for reference –
We added some specific Pages on the main page, including References, Definitions, About Dream and Photos/Videos. Now I can keep the blogs shorter and more focused and refer you to specific pages. Never mind that this simple addition took us 3 years to accomplish, but nevertheless it is done and hopefully it will help you use the blog more easily.

Nearly Famous Rebuilding Seminar –Wednesday April 19th, 2017
Our next Rebuilding Seminar will be held on Wednesday April 19th, 2017 from 6 pm at the Tuscan Bar and Grill on Hooper Avenue in Toms River, across from the Ocean County Mall.
Speakers: At this point, we know we’ll have Kathleen Dotoli, with her consumer protection discussion, Camille Marotta from Annie Mac Mortgage with financing options, and Scott Lepley, architect. We’ll have one of our project managers Tim Tennis there, and I’ll be answering questions about construction and the process.
We’ll focus on Sandsters that are early in the process, and have not completed design work, or chosen a builder or architect. We offer engineering & architectural design advice, RREM guidance at the initial stages, and help with choosing the right builder or contractor. Please call 732 300 5619 to reserve your space if you want to attend. Refreshments will be served and space is limited.
For Shame – Another Article about Shore House Lifters and How RREM Dropped the Ball!
In today’s Asbury Park Press, Jean Mikle & Russ Zimmer wrote a very good article about Sandy victims who’ve been ripped off by contractors. The article is well written and focuses on Shore House Lifters, how they’ve defrauded numerous people and why it took RREM so long to stop them from doing additional business in NJ. I had a nice conversation with Jean several days ago where we discussed what could have been done to prevent this type of thing, and steps consumers can take to avoid it happening to them. There are several quotes of mine in the article. I urge you (and urged Jean to tell her readers) to visit the Nearly Famous Rebuilding Blog ( ) for tips and cautions to take before signing a real estate or renovation contract. Another item to remember is to attend a Rebuilding Seminar where Kathleen Dotoli, Esquire, a workers’ compensation attorney in Toms River, gives an excellent presentation about consumer protection. Email Kathy at or call her office at 732 228 7534 for a copy of the handout.
Here’s the link to the APP article, which was in today’s paper.

Foundations, Foundations, Foundations!!
The foundation is the most important aspect of your construction or renovation project, the single category that costs the most and easily the most complex. Correctly evaluating foundation options requires years of experience in architecture, engineering, construction science and actual completed projects. It’s where we bring the most value to the table.
I’ve written the most over the years about various foundation techniques and today I’ll touch again on one that is commonly overlooked.
It’s the concept of a frame wall being built on top of a block foundation. With this method, there are monetary savings from using a frame wall instead of block, as well as less weight on the footing, which may (in some cases) enable one to use a spread concrete footing instead of pilings. There is also the added consideration of having the wall ready for siding running down to the top of the concrete block, without framing out the concrete wall and preparing it for vinyl siding.
It’s a hybrid design that many builders won’t use because it’s a little more complex, and many architects and engineers won’t specify, for much the same reason. It has its place in the Rebuilding Toolbox and should be considered, particularly if your exterior finish of choice is vinyl siding running down to 2’-4’ above grade.

Facts about Dream Homes – Attention Ocean & Monmouth County Sandsters

Recently, several of our clients spoke to us and suggested we write about all we’ve done for Sandsters since Sandy, and how many people we’ve helped bring home. I thought that was a good idea, so I wrote a few words.
At Dream Homes, one of the many things that sets us apart is that we’re Sandsters too and everyone in our company was affected by Storm Sandy. All of us had to rebuild to some extent, most had to move for a period of time and we all know exactly what it’s like to have our lives altered by an event like Sandy.
What does that mean? Well, with 188 clients moved back in their homes since Sandy, we’ve helped many people rebuild their lives. That’s only clients we’ve helped directly. When you consider the positive effects of the seminars and this blog, we’ve easily helped three times as many people.
Out of our total number of clients, 32 have been Sandster Rescues, where our clients were abandoned by Shore House Lifters, JN Construction, Price Home Group or others and left with unfinished projects and (usually) much emptier pockets.
Some interesting facts to remember about Dream Homes:
1. We’ve never left a project unfinished and have helped over 162 people move home since Sandy.
2. Our team has built over 1600 new homes in over 200 subdivisions since 1993, in addition to the 190 Sandy elevation and renovation projects we’ve completed.
3. We’re based in NJ with 2 offices and we’re actively engaged in building new homes, moving and elevating homes, and completing all types of renovations, from the simplest to the most complex.
4. We’ve become a RREM specialist and helped hundreds of Sandsters work through RREM, LMI and ICC claims with their insurance companies.
5. We’re the only publicly trading company (OTCQB: VRTR) doing this type of work in New Jersey. Our financials are audited and online for your review so you know who you’re dealing with.

Mission Statement and Comment: AT Dream Homes, we’ll help you when no one else will. We regularly handle the messiest, most unpleasant, real estate, construction and renovation situations. We do the projects that few other people can do, and help people finish their projects and get back in their homes. If you’re stuck and can’t figure out how to proceed, call us and we’ll do our best to help you.
At Dream Homes, we believe that taking on difficult unpopular projects is part of the social contract we have with the community and the Jersey Shore. We’ve never abandoned a client or failed to finish a project – we feel very strongly that it is our obligation to help Sandsters and others in need.

Future Homes for Sale: We’re working on the development approvals for a property in Bayville and we’ll be offering 13 beautiful new homes for sale in the mid $200,000 range in late 2017 / early 2018. If you’re looking for a new home this year or early next year, give us a call and we’ll get you information.
Thanks to Jamie from Glen Kelly who brought us this property.

2017 Scheduling: Critical dates to remember: If you want to get your project completed this year before the summer, you must have plans in hand now and either submitted or about to be submitted to your town. Up and down the shore, we’re running 4-6 weeks to get through building and zoning (Hint from previous blogs – submit zoning as soon as you have the footprint and the stair/entries done even if you’re still working on finalizing your architectural plans.

Perfect Time for Fall 2017: It is however, the perfect time to start working on a September or October 2017 start. Get agreements signed, engineering and design scope started, and get plot plans and architecturals submitted to zoning for review. There’s no reason you can’t have an approved plan set of plans waiting at the township in July or August, awaiting receipt of your utility disconnect letters. Planning ahead doesn’t cost you any additional money, and the value to you is priceless.

There’s Real…and then there’s Memorex…What an Estimate and Scope of Work is Supposed to Look Like…
Click on the link above or call us and we’ll send you a blank scope of work for your reference.

If you were Ripped Off – Reminder: If you’ve been ripped off by any dishonest contractor and are stuck, call us and we’ll help you. You may qualify for a $2000 credit towards your project.

Yeah, We Do That for You… This was an excellent (if I do say so myself) article from the 1/8/17 blog, which received much positive response from many people. If you missed it, go back and read it now at

Remember – if you have a specific question, send me an email or a text. Don’t wait for a seminar or a site visit to clarify a point. Whether you are Dream Homes/Atlantic Northeast Construction client or not, I’ll always try and help you or guide you in the right direction. If you’ve sent an email or left a voice mail and haven’t received a response, try and contact me again. Messages are lost occasionally.
Note to Sandsters: Though I write this blog and hold the seminars to help guide Sandsters and others through the maze that is any reconstruction project, Dream Homes actually does what I write about. Dream Homes & Development Corp. and Atlantic Northeast Construction LLC are new home builders and general contractors who are actively renovating and reconstructing projects up and down the shore. We supervise and manage elevation projects & house moves, demolish and build new homes, and develop and build entire new neighborhoods. In the past 23 years, we’ve completed over 1500 new homes, 190 elevation projects and 500,000 square feet of commercial buildings. 26 of our elevation projects have been rescue projects, where we came in to save a homeowner when someone else left. Dream builds new homes, demolishes existing damaged homes, elevates and move homes, complete additions and renovations and rescues homeowners when their other builder abandons them. We work with private clients as well as Path B clients in the RREM program. Call, text or email to set up an appointment for a free estimate on your rebuilding project.
That’s all for today Sandsters. I hope my words helps you move forward and I hope to see you at the seminar on April 19th. As always, call or write with any questions.
